Mesa, AZ – Unlike a week ago when Midland dominated Mesa, 77-51, at the Odessa (Texas) Classic, this time MCC held tough against the tall Division I team from Texas before finally falling, 71-61, at Theo Heap Gym Friday on the first day of the Veteran's Day Classic.

The final score doesn't look that close, but the Chaparrals couldn't shake loose of the T-Birds until midway through the fourth quarter.

With 7:22 to play a free throw by Diamond Fuller drew Mesa to within 56-54. This after MCC never trailed in the first half and was tied at halftime, 28-28.

The 4-0 Chaparrals took their first lead, 42-41, after overcoming a seven-point deficit at the start of the third quarter as MCC drained seven straight points.

The loss drops the T-Birds to 0-4 in a brutal, season-opening stretch against six Division I opponents.

Fuller poured in a career-high 29 points, easily out-doing her previous best of 22 last year against Chandler-Gilbert. She also added nine rebounds.

Iris Domebo added 12 and Cheyenne Begay scored 11.

Mesa is back in action Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. taking on Salt Lake, which fell to Cochise, 71-56, in the tournament's first game.
