Mesa, AZ - The oppurtunities were there for the #12 Mesa Thunderbirds volleyball team, but they just could not finish off the victory over the #4 Glendale Gauchos Wednesday night. The T-Birds were defeated by the Gauchos in five sets, 26-28, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12.
The set that will haunt the T-Birds was the first set, as Mesa held an 18-12 advantage and the momentum heading into the final points but the Gauchos cut the lead to 20-17 before the T-Birds called a timeout. Eventually, Glendale tied the set at 22 and after exchanging ties at points 23, 24, 25, 26, the Gauchos finished off the set with the final two points.
It was almost the same story in set two as Mesa held an 18-10 advantage before Glendale rallied back, rattling off a 10-2 run and evening the set at 20. Mesa however took five of the next seven points to win the set.
In the final set, Mesa held the advantage at the switch, taking an 8-6 lead. But once again, coming from behind, the Gauchos tied it at eight and eventually went ahead, 10-8. Mesa was unable to catch back up and fell three sets to two.
The T-Birds are now 10-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Mesa will be right back in action tomorrow night as they host Benedictine University JV at 7 pm.
