Friday May 2, 2025 - 3:00 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger
Mesa Track & Field completed the NJCAA Region I Championships on Thursday night.
Women's Track & Field:
The Lady T-Birds took third place as they total 191 points as they fell to runner-up Central Arizona College by just four points.
Carmella Baldwin became the Region Champion in the Steeplechase as she clocked a time of 11:35.46. Baldwin was also the runner-up in the 5000m as she finished in 19:21.70. SeiOriana Glass took runner-up honors in the Discus Throw hitting a mark of 40.14m. Madisyn Williams finished second in the Pole Vault as she was successful at 3.46m.
In the team relays the Lady T-Birds had great showings as the 4x800 Relay team of Kendra Guest, Katie Munoz, Kinley Jackson, and Lucy Melzer took the region crown with a time of 9:32.37. The 4x100 Relay team of Erin Mabry, Sara Jacobson, Natalia Brzezniak, and Kate Dare took second place with a time of 48.49. This is the first time the team has competed together in the event.
Jacobson also accomplished yet another impressive feat at the meet as she qualified for Outdoor Nationals in the Pole Vault, this is more impressive due to the fact that Jacobson only started pole vaulting a week before the meet and had roughly three hours of experience before competing and qualifying.
Men's Track & Field:
The T-Bird Men took Region Runner-Up honors as they collected 171 points.
Austin John had a monster meet as he took home the region crown in the Discus Throw (45.72m), Hammer Throw (51.78m), and the Shot Put (15.36m). Cameron Arsenault was a close second in the Shot Put as he hit 15.22m.
DeAndre Gatlin took home the region title in the High Jump as he was successful at 2.12m. Corbin Pyle took first in the 800m finishing in 1:54.41 with teammate Caden Hardison finishing close behind in second place with a time of 1:55.18.
The 4x800m Relay team of Parker Stoft, Caden Hardison, Benett Kaup, and Corbin Pyle took first place with a time of 7:50.73.
Though the T-Birds came up short of the Region I title, the coaching staff is extremely proud of their athletes who kept pushing and hope to see that same determination at Outdoor Nationals in mid May.
"We as a coaching staff are extremely proud of how each of our teams competed," said head coach Daniel Pescador, "It was a hard fought region championship, and we told the athletes that we can compete and perform well. It was a total team effort! It was great to see the team atmosphere and camaraderie, and they battled to the end."
