Mesa, AZ - The T-Birds are champions once again!
Facing a very familiar foe, the Mesa Thunderbirds defended its Region I - ACCAC Championship by defeating the Pima Aztecs, 76-61, in front of a packed Theo Heap Gym crowd Saturday night.
The #1 seed T-Birds continued its dominance of ACCAC DII opponents, as they officially ended the season undefeated against all eight DII teams, first time a Kori Stephenson led team has accomplished such a feat.
Being led all season by veteran point guard, Takara Wade, Mesa took a 6-5 lead in the four minute mark of the first quarter and never again relinquished that lead.
Big time players play big in big time games and Wade can now be added to that list as she was just one assist shy of a triple-double. She had 15 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in 37 minutes of action, earning the game MVP. All of Mesa's starting five finished in the points category with double-figures. Diamond Fuller had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Leah Goodman finished with a game-high 21 points, knocking down five total three pointers. Anessa Glenn finished with 15 points and eight rebounds while Deja Dagons had 10 points, six rebounds.
This will be the sixth national tournament appearance for Kori Stephenson and her coaching staff. The tournament will again be held in Harrison, AR, from March 20-24. Details of seedings and live game streaming will be announced within the next few days. Continue to check the mesatbirdsports.com website for further details.
