Mesa, AZ- The Mesa women's basketball team couldn't overcome a big second half from Arizona Western Tuesday night as they fell to the Matadors, 62-50.

Mesa did jump out front early, as Erica Vasquez(So., Mesa, AZ, Red Mountain H.S.) made a layup and then connected on a jump shot from the top of the key to give Mesa the 11-5 lead.

But the T-Birds only managed to score two points within a seven minute span which helped the Matadors get back in the game, even taking the lead at one point.

Both teams, especially the Matadors, were stoned cold from three.  Mesa missed all four of three's they attempted and the Matadors were 4-14.

Taylor Reed(Fr., Kingman, AZ, Kingman H.S.) connected on four free throws and a Natalie Stillwell(Fr., Fountain Hills, AZ, Fountain Hills H.S.) layup sent Mesa into halftime with a two point advantage, 24-22.

But the Matadors lit up Theo Heap Gym in the second half, connecting on five three's which turned out to be the difference maker in the end.

Mesa put together a small rally midway through the half but could not overcome the deficit.

Mesa will be back at home Sunday afternoon as College of Spokane rolls into town, tipoff at 1 p.m.
