BENETT KAUP FINISHES THIRD IN REGION DECATHLON, KLAUBA ADDS STRONG FINISH
Mesa Community College men's track & field turned in a solid showing at the Region I Decathlon, led by a third-place finish from Benett Kaup in his first career decathlon.
Kaup totaled a strong all-around score across the 10 events, highlighted by a first-place finish in the 1500 meters (4:13.90) to close out the meet and secure his podium position. He opened with a 12.07 in the 100 meters and added a 6.06m mark in the long jump and 9.51m in the shot put. Kaup continued to build points with a 1.66m clearance in the high jump and a 51.41 in the 400 meters to remain in contention.
Kaup stayed consistent in the hurdles (20.52) and discus (23.56m) before clearing 3.21m in the pole vault. He capped his field events with a 40.42m throw in the javelin, setting up his strong finish in the 1500m. His balance across both track and field disciplines played a key role in securing third place in a competitive field.
James Klauba delivered a strong all-around performance to place sixth overall, emerging as a key contributor for the Thunderbirds. Klauba showed strength in multiple events, including a 51.47 in the 400 meters and a 37.57m mark in the javelin. He added valuable points in the jumps and hurdles, maintaining steady production across both days of competition.
Klauba's consistency across the decathlon events helped anchor Mesa's overall performance, highlighting his versatility in both track and field disciplines.
Mesa's efforts were highlighted by Kaup's podium finish in his decathlon debut and Klauba's top-six placement, showcasing depth and balance at the Regin I championships.
