NJCAA Region I Golf Championship Recap: Round Three

Mesa Golf competed in the third round of the NJCAA Region I Golf Championship on Wednesday. 

Women's Golf:

The Lady T-Birds had their best day on the course in round three as they shot +24 on the day, a 14 stroke improvement over round two and a 20 stroke difference from the opening round. 

Kasey Reichard sits atop the leaderboard as she fired her second straight +5 (76) day in the tournament.  Reichard is +20 overall in her three days of action. Mackenzie Vongphosy  moved up to second place after round three as she also shot +5 (76) in the round. This is Vongphosy's best round of the event after she shot +9 (80) in round one, and +11 (82) in the second round. Vongphosy is +25 in the event.

Addison King sits in third place after her second +10 (81) day at Ocotillo GC. King is +27 in the event after starting off in first place following the first round.  Lilian Stutz sits in 4th place after the best round of the day where she is +4 (75). Stutz has rebounded from round one where she shot +18 (89). Stutz is +34 going into the final round on Thursday. 

Men's Golf:

The Thunderbirds had a rocky day on the course as they shot +16 on the day as a team, bringing their total for the tournament to +33. Round three was Mesa's their worst round so far in the tournament. Luckily for the T-Birds, their +5 second round has given them wiggle room when it comes to staying ahead of  third place Chandler-Gilbert. Mesa leads the Coyotes by 18 strokes while trailing first place South Mountain by 16 strokes. 

Nathan Giles and Kush Shah who are both tied for fourth continued their consistent play that they started in the opening two rounds. Giles is +6 in the tournament after having a down day on the course.as he shot +4 (75). Giles has been stellar till this point as he posted back-to-back +1 (72) days in the opening rounds.

Shah who is also +6 in the tournament, shot +3 (74) in the third round after a rockiest day of the tournament so far when compared to round one where he shot +1 (72) and round two when he shot +2 (73). 

Luke Stephens has jumped three places since round two as he sits tied for 6th at +8 overall. Stephens had an even par (71) round two and +3 (74) round three. Tanner Thompson sits in 17th place as he has rebounded from his +11 (82) opening round to fire +2 (73) in round one and +6 (77) in round three. Thompson is +19 overall through three rounds.

The tournament will conclude tomorrow at Ocotillo golf Course, tee times begin at 12:30 p.m. The top two men's and women's teams will advance to NJCAA National Championship.
