MEN'S BASKETBALL COMES UP SHORT AGAINST SCOTTSDALE ON SATURDAY

Mesa Community College Men's Basketball battled Scottsdale Community College on Saturday afternoon but came up short in a 78-70 ACCAC contest at Theo Heap Gymnasium.

The T-Birds stayed within striking distance for much of the game, trailing just 42-39 at halftime after matching Scottsdale's physical play inside. Mesa continued to battle in the second half, but the Artichokes capitalized on free throws and second-chance opportunities to gradually extend the lead in the closing minutes.

Tyreek Dean paced Mesa with a double-double, finishing with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while shooting 8-of-11 from the field. Denali McNeal added 15 points, knocking down three three-pointers, while Ezias Steffen and Kashar Benton each scored 12. Benton also pulled down nine rebounds to anchor the frontcourt effort.

Mesa shot nearly 40 percent from the field and hit seven three-pointers, but struggled at the free-throw line, converting just 13-of-28 attempts. Scottsdale used a strong performance off the bench including a 30-point outing from Quincy Kirk to secure the conference win.

With the loss, Mesa's record moves to 12-10 overall (6-8 ACCAC). The loss does not exclude the T-Birds from the NJCAA Region I DII Postseason, but it does make each of the final four conference games matter even more down the stretch.

Mesa will look to bounce back Wednesday as the T-Birds travel to Glendale Community College for another key conference matchup.
