Women's Basketball:
No. 13 MCC Women's Basketball continued its strong start to ACCAC play with a 67–57 home win over Phoenix College, improving to 7–3 (4-0 ACCAC).
Phoenix College carried momentum into the break and held a halftime lead, but Mesa took control coming out of the locker room with its most decisive stretch of the game.
The Thunderbirds outscored Phoenix College 25–16 in the third quarter, flipping the game in their favor and building a cushion they would not relinquish. Carmella Gallardo scored 10 of her 15 points in the third period, providing a spark on both ends as MCC seized control. Mesa was aggressive attacking the rim during the quarter, drawing seven fouls and converting all 11 free-throw attempts, a key factor in creating separation.
Lakeisha Robinson led MCC with 16 points, while Amya Bekele added 17 points and knocked down three triples. Maddy Brown anchored the glass with 11 rebounds, and Mesa finished the game shooting 90% from the free-throw line (18-of-20).
After Phoenix closed within single digits in the fourth, Mesa answered with timely stops and free throws down the stretch to secure the conference win.
MCC will be back in action Dec. 17 & 18 at home, hosting Yakima Valley and Lake Land College at Theo Heap Gymnasium.
Men's Basketball:
MCC Men's Basketball improved its record to 6-4 (2-2 ACCAC) following an 80–61 win over Phoenix College, pulling away in the second half after a slow offensive start.
The Thunderbirds struggled early, missing their first nine shots and not scoring until the 16:15 mark of the first half. Despite the opening drought, MCC settled in defensively and closed the half with a 36–26 lead.
Mesa set the tone immediately after halftime, opening the second half on an 8–0 run to extend its advantage and seize full control of the game. The T-Birds shot nearly 60% in the second half and dominated inside, outscoring Phoenix 52–22 in the paint.
Five Thunderbirds scored in double figures, led by Tyreek Dean and Kashar Benton, who both recorded double-doubles. Dean finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Benton posted 12 points and 11 rebounds. Cedarius Yates added 16 points, Ezias Steffen scored 10, and Mike Alexander chipped in 10 as MCC's balanced attack wore down the Bears.
Mesa also controlled the glass with a 51–19 rebounding edge and received strong production off the bench, scoring 36 bench points in the victory.
MCC is back in action Dec. 28 at home against Miles Community College.
