T-BIRD MOMENTS OF 2025-26: THUNDERBIRD ATHLETICS REACHES ELITE 8 OF INAUGURAL NJCAA BEST NICKNAME BRACKET CHALLENGE
The Thunderbird name soared into the national spotlight during the 2025-26 academic year as Mesa Community College Athletics advanced to the Elite 8 of the inaugural NJCAA Best Nickname Bracket Challenge.
The first-ever competition brought together some of the most unique and recognizable nicknames across the NJCAA, with schools from around the country competing in fan voting rounds to determine the top nickname in the association.
Powered by strong support from Thunderbird fans, alumni, student-athletes, coaches and the Mesa Community College community, the Thunderbirds advanced through multiple rounds of voting to earn a place among the final eight nicknames remaining in the nationwide contest.
The Elite 8 finish placed Mesa Community College among the top-performing programs in the inaugural challenge and showcased the strength and recognition of the Thunderbird brand on a national stage.
While the competition was decided through fan engagement rather than athletic performance, the Thunderbirds' run generated excitement throughout the year and united the Mesa community behind a common cause. The challenge also provided additional national exposure for Mesa Community College Athletics and highlighted the pride associated with the Thunderbird nickname.
As one of the unique moments from the 2025-26 season, the Thunderbirds' Elite 8 finish in the inaugural NJCAA Best Nickname Bracket Challenge earned its place among the memorable T-Bird Moments of the year.
