Mesa Memories: MCC Women's Golf Streak

Many sports programs have achieved impressive winning streaks that span events and even seasons—often earning the label "The Streak."

Few, however, rival the dominance displayed by the Mesa Community College women's golf program.

From 2007 to 2018, MCC won 83 consecutive ACCAC tournaments—an extraordinary accomplishment in any setting, but particularly so in junior college athletics where rosters typically turn over every two years, unlike the four-year cycles of universities. Maintaining consistency under such conditions is a challenge.

Head coach John Guerrero, who led the program throughout the entire streak, continually built championship-caliber teams despite that turnover.

During this 11-year run, the Thunderbirds qualified for the NJCAA Division I national championship every season, finishing in the top ten all but once. Mesa also hosted the national event three times during that span.

The program's best finishes came in back-to-back years: fourth place in 2014 and third in 2015. Both teams were anchored by two-time All-American Charatta Thongbai, who placed eighth nationally as a freshman and tied for seventh as a sophomore.

Thongbai wasn't alone in earning national recognition during the streak. MCC golfers received All-America honors seven times, beginning with Lindi Dovarrubias in 2007 and followed by Jamie Jaruvangsanti in 2011. The 2015 team featured three All-Americans—Thongbai, Sierra Meyerscough, and Jill Harvison. Haley Kapanicas added her name to the list in 2017.

Though the streak ended in 2018, Mesa's excellence continued. Madison Voisard became an All-American in 2019, proving the program's strength remained intact.

While other MCC programs have enjoyed stretches of success, few in the country can match the women's golf team's 83 straight victories—a standard of sustained excellence.
