Mesa Sports Memories: Men's golf soars to national title
Since 1968, Mesa Community College athletic teams have captured a remarkable 20 national championships. But it wasn't until 2017 that the Thunderbirds got to celebrate a title victory in their own backyard.
That historic moment came courtesy of the men's golf team, who clinched a thrilling five-shot win on their home course, Longbow Golf Club in Mesa. The championship was sealed in dramatic fashion when Jeff Kelley drained a 25-foot putt on the 18th hole, securing MCC's first NJCAA Division II men's golf national title.
Mesa's journey to the championship began nearly a month earlier, when the team earned a host exemption after placing second in the Region I, Division II tournament. Familiarity with their home course gave the T-Birds confidence—and they made the most of it.
After the opening round, MCC stood in third place, trailing Mississippi Gulf Coast by eight strokes. Yet consistency became Mesa's hallmark. On day one, all five golfers shot 74 or better—setting the tone for the week. Across the entire four-day tournament, only one round exceeded 75.
Kelley led the first round with a one-under-par 70. By tournament's end, four Mesa golfers would finish in the top nine individually.
Day two saw Jacob Guess (71) and Dean Harpe (72) rise to the occasion. Still, MCC trailed Mississippi Gulf Coast by nine shots and sat just one stroke behind Murray State (GA) at the tournament's halfway mark.
The real momentum shift came on day three. MCC carded the lowest team round of the tournament, a 287, cutting the deficit to just two shots. Kelley and Brad Pottle each posted 70s to lead the charge.
On the final day, the T-Birds erased the deficit by the turn and took a two-shot lead. Harpe was the spark, firing four birdies on the front nine for a four-under 31. The team closed out the victory with authority, sinking seven birdies on the back nine, including three on the 18th by Gage Grimes, Pottle, and Kelley.
Mesa ultimately finished five strokes ahead of Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Kelley tied for third individually with a 287. Harpe followed in fifth (289), just one shot ahead of Guess, while Pottle tied for ninth (290).
All four earned NJCAA All-American honors:
-
Kelley and Guess – First Team
-
Pottle – Second Team
-
Grimes – Honorable Mention
In 2017, Longbow truly lived up to the phrase "home sweet home"—delivering a championship moment that will be remembered in Mesa golf history.
