Phoenix, AZ - The #19 Mesa Thunderbirds were on the brink of letting Phoenix College take them to a fifth and final set but the T-Birds rallied from a 19-24 set point deficit to win, 28-26, and take the match, 3-1. The final set scored were as followed, 25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 28-26.
Mesa came out firing, not letting the Bears have its first lead until the third set. In set one, the T-Birds maintaned a six point advantage throughout.
In set two, Mesa again jumped out to a quick lead and cruised throughout for a two set lead but the T-Birds had a bit of a let down heading into the third set, with PC reversing the momuntum. In the fourth and final set, each team went back and forth, tied at the 11 mark before PC pushed ahead, going ahead, 16-12.
The Bears had visions of a fifth set, with the score at set point, 24-19, but Mesa played tough volleyball, rattling off five straight points and tying the set at 24. The T-Birds jumped ahead, 25-24, but the Bears tied it at 25. Mesa again ahead, 26-25 and PC once again tied it and 26.
But that was the last points the Bears would get as Mesa nailed down the final two points to take the set, 28-26, and the match, 3-1.
Mesa is 12-8 on the season overall, 9-6 in the ACCAC conference. The T-Birds will have one final match of the season which will be next Friday night at Theo Heap Gym against the Pima Aztecs. That is also sophomore night so come out and celebrate the sophomores of the Mesa T-Birds. Match begins at 7 p.m.
