Mesa Softball Sweeps GCU Club on Opening Weekend, 9-6, 6-5 Finals

Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds softball team swept their opening series of the season, 9-6, 6-5 wins vs Grand Canyon Club Saturday afternoon.

It was a solid third and fourth innings for the T-Birds in game one that help them earn their first victory of the season. 

Amber Saiz tripled to lead off the third and she scored when Lindsey Paboucek singled to left field.  Saiz run was Mesa's second run at that point.  After Paboucek stole second, Ryan Holmes tripled down the right field line to score Paboucek.  Nikki Begay then singled in Holmes from third with Begay latered knocked in on a double from Sammy Quezada.

In the sixth inning, it was Ryan Holmes who smashed a solo homer over the right center field fence to knotch Mesa's final run of game one.

In game two, Mesa went down early but battled back to take the 6-5 victory.

Mesa will begin conference play next week with a double-header at Scottsdale on Tuesday at 5:30 and 7:30 pm then at Gateway on Saturday for a noon and 2 pm start.
